The Shingo Research Prize recognizes and promotes research and writing regarding new knowledge and understanding of manufacturing consistent with the philosophy of The Shingo Prize for Operational Excellence Business Prize Guidelines. Awards are given in four categories: (1) unpublished papers, (2) published articles, (3) books (monographs) and (4) applied publications/multimedia programs.

Research published within the last three years is eligible for consideration in the published research category. Unpublished research of journal quality submitted in accordance with guidelines established by the Research and Professional Publications Board of Examiners is eligible for consideration in the unpublished research category. Books (monographs) are also eligible for publication in the professional publication category. Research or publications submitted should provide new theory or novel application.  Reviews, restatements, textbooks and/or edited versions will generally not be considered.  However, in recognition of the critical need of textbooks which are founded in lean systems, texts in the areas of accounting, operations management and information systems could be considered until this need is met.
Applicants Need to Provide:

1. Research Prize Application Form – provides information about authors, including brief biographical sketches.
2. A completed Shingo Prize criteria Questionaire, detailing how the work meets the criteria outlined in the form.
3. Abstract – Maximum one page in length
4. Copies of the work as defined in the Submission Requirements below.
5. Application Fee as defined in the Submission Requirements below.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The Shingo Prize Business Guidelines uses a principle based systems model that is divided into five primary categories: (1) Leadership Culture & Infrastructure; (2) Manufacturing Strategies & System Integration; (3) Business Functions & Process Integration; (4) Quality, Cost & Delivery; (5) Customer Satisfaction & Profitability. Specific information about the Shingo Prize model can be found in the Business Prize Guidelines and at www.ShingoPrize.org. A research article or publication submitted for consideration should fit into one or more categories and contribute to the philosophy inherent in the Business Prize Guidelines.

Publications and research articles should contribute to the body of knowledge concerning operational excellence consistent with the Shingo Prize. Academic articles should generally provide new theory or application that is new and original. Reviews and/or restatements will generally not be considered.

III. Writing Excellence
Publications and research articles should be easy to read and well written, meeting needs of the target audience, and have a high likelihood of becoming required reading for lean practitioners and/or researchers.

1 Abstract: Maximum one page in length
2 Double-Sided Format:

• Double-spaced, double-sided
• 12-point font, reasonable margins
• Reference author(s) on title page only
• Bibliography in Modern Language Association (MLA) standard at end of article

Examination Process

The examination process has three steps:

Submissions are reviewed for merit to determine if further review is warranted.

Meritorious submissions are distributed for review by members of the Board of Examiners.

Based upon the reviews, the Board of Examiners will recommend finalists to the Shingo Prize Board of Governors.

The Board of Governors reviews the recommendations and may amend or ratify the recommendations.  Submitters will be notified of their status after the Board meeting.

Decisions by the Board of Governors are final and are not subject to appeal.  Submitters will receive written feedback after status notification.

Confidentiallity
All applications, author information, commentaries and evaluation information are held confidential.   All individuals involved with the review, handling, and processing of application reports sign a nondisclosure agreement which is kept on file at the Shingo prize office.  Examiners are assigned in such a manner that conflicts of interest are avoided.

Individuals interested in submitting or nominating a professional publication for the Research & Professional Publications Prize, should obtain a full set of guidelines and criteria found on the Shingo Prize web site at www.ShingoPrize.org or by contacting the Shingo Prize office at the address included in this booklet. All nominations and submissions must be received no later than September 1.
